Trope Machine is a free brainstorming tool from PlotCheck that generates story-seed ideas. By using the site, you agree to these terms.

Using the site

Trope Machine is provided free of charge, with no account or sign-up required. You may use it for personal or commercial creative writing purposes, including using generated seeds as the basis for your own stories.

• Don't use the site to overwhelm, scrape at scale, or disrupt the service for other users.
• Don't submit reports or share links containing unlawful, abusive, or infringing content.
• We may rate-limit, block, or restrict access for abusive use.

Generated content and ownership

Story seeds are generated from a pool of reusable setting, character, and trope elements and are not unique creative works owned by us. You're free to use, adapt, or publish anything Trope Machine generates for you, including boards you save or share.

Shared boards (created via the share feature) are stored so the link keeps working, and are accessible to anyone who has the link.

No warranty

Trope Machine is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind. We don't guarantee the tool will be uninterrupted, error-free, or suited to any particular purpose. Generated content is a creative prompt, not professional or legal advice.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, PlotCheck and Trope Machine's operators aren't liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the site.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the site evolves. Continued use of Trope Machine after an update means you accept the revised terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles.
